gRead - The Google Reader widget

Now you don’t need to keep compulsively reloading Google Reader — gRead will keep an eye on your account and let you know when there’s something to get stuck into, through its built-in Growl support and on your Dashboard. And all it takes is a click to get you there!

Keeping you informed

gread widget front gread widget back

gRead is designed to be simple and bold, letting you know at a glance how your Google Reader account is doing with its large, clear unread items badge. gRead updates regularly, so it’s always got the latest information. That’s all it does — no fancy features to deal with. Oh, and the whole widget is a giant click target to take you right to Google Reader so you can get that unread count down. Neat, huh?

Maybe you don’t even need to know how many items there are, and just want a subtle indicator that they’re there. gRead’s got you covered there too — just (option) click the i button to get to gRead’s advanced preferences and turn on Colours mode: blue means nothing new, green means there’s a little and red means you’ve got plenty to read!

Colours mode — nothing, a little, or lots to read.

Growl support is built-in.

gread growl notifications

gRead can use Growl, the subtle, customisable notifications manager, to keep you informed. If you check the box to enable Growl notifications, then — assuming you have it installed — gRead will put a small notice up on your screen whenever it finds new material. It even works when Dashboad is hidden... because gRead will check for new articles in the background, every ten minutes.

Keeping you secure
security

Just because it’s a widget, doesn’t mean gRead is cavalier with your personal information. gRead has always connected securely to Google’s servers, so that noone can spy on you or intercept your password.

And now, unlike many widgets, it doesn’t store your password in plain text; it’s locked away in the keychain, safe from prying eyes. It’s as secure as a widget can be, and we’re always on the lookout for ways to tighten things up!

Dine-O-Matic Widget

Installing the Widget

If you are using Safari as your browser, click the "Get It" button above to download. Once the download is complete, you will be presented with a dialog box asking if you would like to install the widget. Click the install button and Dashboard will automatically open and place the widget on the desktop. Once you see the widget loaded onto the screen, simply click the "Keep" button to complete the installation.

If you are using a browser other than Safari, once the widget download is complete, decompress it and place it in /Library/Widgets/ in your home folder. Show Dashboard in the Finder, click the plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget's icon in the Widget Bar to open it.

Using Dine-O-Matic

The widget comes with several eateries pre-loaded so you can get a quick feel for how it works. To enter your own favorite restaurants, simply click the "i" button in the red title bar to flip the widget over. You can then clear the pre-set dining selections and enter your own.

Once a new eatery is created, you can add the restaurant's address, cuisine category, phone number, fax number and website address as well as set price and favorite ratings. You can then use these ratings to filter or weight Dine-O-Matic's final selection. When you're finished adding your favorite places to dine, simply press the "Done" button.

To have Dine-O-Matic select a place to eat, first set the price filter level using the dollar sign icons. By selecting the number of dollar signs, you are telling the widget to select eateries rated at that price level or lower. For example, selecting one dollar sign will choose from only the least expensive restaurants, while selecting all four dollar signs tells Dine-O-Matic to select from all restaurants.

Click the "Blue Plate Special" button to have Dine-O-Matic start its magic and let you know where you'll be eating tonight! It's that easy!
