Prizmo for iPhone - Process any Documents on the Road (Reviewed)

**This review is base on version 1.0.2 on iPod Touch 2G

Priz

Prizmo for iPhone is an All-in-One Mobile Scanning  app. It's quite stable and solid in my iPod touch 2g. The UI looks great. However, the performance for grabbing text from pic doesn't seem to be as good as it advertised or seen in video. Don't expect the app to get it's job done right. I tried to upload files saved in Prizmo to Dropbox and CloudApp but the app always crashed on me when I do so. It's either this feature doesn't work on old model or there is currently a bug there. Furthermore, it has a text to speech feature called "Reader" and you can't use it unless you pay another $2.99 to buy voices. You paid $9.99 for the app and you don't get to access to all feature it offers for FREE? This is going to piss off a lot of people who bought the app. I think Creaceed should at least allow one USA male and one USA female voice FREE for purchasing the app (or allow users who purchased the app to choose one voice for FREE) and offer users to buy more voices in other languages.

Goalbook: make a list of goals and objectives you want to accomplish (Reviewed)

***This is a review for version 1.4.1 of Goalbook in iPod Touch running iOS 4***

Cover

Goalbook, as the name implied, is an application to track your goals on your iPhone and iPod Touch. It's developed by Adaptablecode.( http://www.adaptablecode.com/ ) It is the first application that "eats and breathes goals" as the developer claimed. Goalbook has an awesome UI that you may be familiar with if you have been using Awesome Notes. You probably should get yourself a copy of Goalbook if you love the UI of Awesome Notes. You can use Goalbook for your small goals or big ones if you like. You can even share your goals with people all over the world if you want to. I think you would love it if you are someone with many goals and need a way to organize and share them all.

Following is a list of features for current version as you will find on its website.

Great experience!
Goal tracking
Add pictures to your goals
Add location to your goals
Tweet your goals
Share goals and look at goals in others languages in the world
Rate shared goals (thumb up/down)
View the newest shared goals
View populair shared goals
A polaroid view with all your goal pictures
A map with all your goals

Photo-4

Here is a list of features you will see in the next update.

Deadline

You will see more features listed below in the future.

Goal rearranging
Grouping/tagging
Rate your goals for importance

Photo-1

Now, I like to give you a quick tutorial of Goalbook.

You will see a cover page where you can enter  either a title or a short description for your Goalbook when you started Goalbook. You will also see that there are five tap or buttons on the bottom screen. On the screen of first button,  you will see a list of goals you created if there is any. There are two buttons on the top. The one on the left  would allow you to filter your goal by all, completed and incomplete goals. The right one is the button for you to create a goal. You  can select to have the sharing feature on and off. You will not see your goals in the list of your goals if you have sharing set to on because they will be added to Global Goals in the fourth button.  BTW, you can tap any of the goals listed to show more options like adding pictures, tweet them and more.
Photo-3

In the second button, you will see thumbnails of pictures associated with each of your goals if you have added any to them. You can tap them to see the full pictures and flip through them if there are more than one pictures. There third an fourth buttons both require an internet connection. The third one shows a map of the world. Honestly, I have no idea what it is for. I was expecting goals to pop up there but none. All you can do is zoom in and zoom out of the map. The fourth button gives you a list view of global goals where you can rate and add any goals you see there to your goal list. As for the last button, it is the setting and there isn't much but two buttons for you to turn on and off.

Overall, I think Goalbook is a great way for you to keep tracking your goals and sharing them if you want to. It has awesome UI and the developer has a big plan for adding more features to the application in the future updates. It is certainly is the best goal tracking application that I known so far for iPhone and iPod Touch users.

**UPDATE: THE VERSION 1.5 OF GOALBOOK IS OUT AS YOU ARE READING THIS OLD REVIEW.

Movies Now HD: The ultimate Moive app for Movies fans (Reviewed)

***This an REVIEW for Movies Now HD on iPod Touch 2G RUNNING iOS 4.***

M1

Movies Now HD is a must-have app if you go to watch movies in the theater regularly or just want to check what new movies are coming. It's an universal application that is designed to work on your iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. I am sure there are many reviews of this app on iPad out there in the internet since this is late-coming review. That's why I am telling you now that this review for Movies Now HD running on iPod Touch.

I have been using the free or version one of Movies Now for quite a while on my iPod Touch before the release of this universal version of Movies Now HD or Movies Now 2. I still have it installed on my iPod Touch. It was called "Movies Now!" and I love it very much. It has been one of the top entertainment application on my iPod Touch. As I am writing this post, Movies Now 2 is no longer for download. It has been removed from App Store like the version one of Movies Now. The reason I bought it up is that I am dissapointed for Movies Now HD after testing it in my iPod Touch.

Below is a list of its feaures and description that I found on its website. You can go there by clicking here. http://www.moviesnowapp.com/

Mobile_photo_aug_17_2010_11_31_18_am

  • Skip the queue - Even before you get to the cinema, you can purchase movie tickets from over 11,000 screens in the US and over 3,000 screens in Canada, anywhere on the go. Our simple 3 step process makes this a breeze. You can securely save your credit card details with a 4-digit passcode for next-time, or alternatively log in to MovieTickets.com to access your account. Once you’ve purchased your tickets you can swipe your card, print your tickets, skip the queue and go right through!
  • Beautiful Movies - Browse through our beautiful showcase of movie posters that you can quickly skim through. You can tap a movie poster to browse additional movie information such as Cast, Genre, Description, and Movie Rating (only available for the iPad, Coming soon to the iPhone).
  • Movie times - Based on your location, Movies Now will pull up a list of the closest cinemas around you. You can then easily browse all the movie showtimes playing at that cinema and even buy tickets for supported theaters!
  • Now - Want to know what movies are playing around you now? We've got just what you need. With our Now feature, you can browse showtimes playing around you within the next 4 hours in a list organized by the most convenient for you to get to.

Here is my hands-on experience with Movies Now HD on my iPod Touch.

Mobile_photo_aug_17_2010_11_32_13_am

Movies Now HD still use the same icon as the iPhone version. I don't have any complain about that since I think the icon looks great. However, I think the font used in the splash screen is ugly. In the main screen, you will find there are four tabs on the bottom of the screen The first one is called Now and as for what it does, you can find it in list above. Notices that the US Box office is no longer showed in Now screen anymore as it was in the original version for iPhone. It has been moved to "Movies" tab next to "Now". You will also see upcoming movies and your wish list in "Movies" tab. Next tab is "Theathers", where you can search for theaters near you and add them as favorite. Final tab is "Profile", where there are two tabs on the top. The Accounts tab allows you to login to your MovieTickets.com and you will also be able to edit your credit card info. The Purchase tab shows the tickets you have purchased.

Compare to the orignal one or should I say the first version of Movies Now for iPhone, the black theme of Movies Now HD is darker, which I don't like at all and prefer the lighter-dark in the original one. I am also unable to remove favored movies when offline like i did in the orignal one. There is still no an in-app setting for the app. Furthermore, the social features like Facebook and Twitter have been removed. I don't care about Facebook since I don't like it all but at least keeps Twitter. There is no longer grid view or movie post view, which I love very much. (It will be coming in the future update.) What I don't get is that it was available in the original version for iPhone and why would it be removed in this version. The develoer also removed the ability to show the starred mark on the top-right corner of the posters in the list views when added to wish list. And although I have favored movies theaters, they just never showed there when restart the app. I wonder if it's a bug or just intended that way. If so, it's pointless to allow the users to favorite them in the first place.

Mobile_photo_aug_17_2010_11_31_55_am

Overall, the UI and the buttons has been modified in Movies Now HD that is running in my iPod Touch compare to the original version for iPhone. I must say I don't like those changes at all. Honestly, I think the developer of Movies Now has removed many wonderful things I saw in the original one and it's a big step backward. However, it is still the best movie application on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad for any movies fans out there. At least that's what I think.

Momento (Diary/Journal) - a unique diary/journal writing app for iPhone (Reviewed)

***This is a review for version 1.0.6 of Momento in iPod Touch running iOS 4***

1qa

Momento is a unique approach to diary writing for your iPhone and IPod Touch as the developer described. It is designed and developed by d3i. I think you should look at it as a digital version of your diary book that you keep everyday if you are someone who love to write whenever there is a moment that an ideas or things pop up in your head. We are living in a digital world today and I think keeping a diary book is so in the past. Momento should be the replacement of your old diary book  that you can carry everywhere if you happen to own an iPhone or iPod Touch. It's much much portable than a diary book and does more than a diary book.

Mobile_photo_aug_3_2010_6_00_45_pm

Momento is really well-designed and has a gorgeous looking UI that you sure will be pleased when using it. No only can it replace your diary book for recording whatever you want to write down in you mind but it also records the moments of your digital life. Your online activities like tweets from your Twitter Account and Messages you posted to your Facebook Wall can all be recorded to Momento. It really has the best of both world. BTW, you should also see it as your digital journal if you don't keep a Diary but a Journal.
Mobile_photo_aug_3_2010_6_00_56_pm

Here is a list of its current features on its website:

  • Privately record your daily activities, experiences, thoughts and ideas on the go.
  • Tag people, places & events for a fast and effective way to browse and search your diary.
  • Create custom tags to categorise and keyword moments however you wish.
  • Import your social activity to display it alongside your personal moments.
  • Search and browse by content, date and tags to easily recall, reflect and reminisce.

You will also be able to

  • Rate moments
  • Attach photos
  • Add passcode protection

Here is a list of current social feeds you can add:

  • Tweets from Twitter
  • Statuses from Facebook
  • Photos from Flickr
  • Loved tracks from Last.fm

Mobile_photo_aug_3_2010_6_01_31_pm

***NOTICES THAT YOU WOULD BE ALBE TO ADD MORE SOCIAL FEEDS AND IT'S COMING AS INDICATED ON ITS WEBSITE.

Now, it's time for some tutorial of the application, Momento.

Mobile_photo_aug_3_2010_6_01_19_pm

In the app, you will always see two same buttons on the top and four same buttons on the button of the screen. the button on the top left is the setting (although you can export your personal moments in the setting but you arent  able to export your social/digital moments at this time) and the button on the top right is the button you tap to compose or record your new "moment". As you can see, there is a line of buttons right above the keyboard. The first button is where you type whatever you want to write down and you will also be able to rate it. The next four buttons are different tags that you can add to the moment you just created as  mentioned in the features above. And the last button is where you can add pictures.

Mobile_photo_aug_3_2010_6_01_09_pm

Overall, Momento is really amazing applcation on your iPhone and iPod Touch. It is solid and beautifully designed to record the "moments" of your (digital) life. I have used it for quite a while and It has never crashed on me even after I updated my iPod Touch to iOS 4. There is an big update coming for Momento and I just can't wait to find out what new features we will be seeing. BTW, If you have an Reeder for iPhone installed, you will notice that Momento's UI is somewhat similar to Reeder for iPhone  if you understand what I mean. I pointed that out because I think if you like Reeder for iPhone, you will surely fall for Momento as well.

EXTRA!! EXTRA!!

Although I am not someone who like to keep a diary daily, I can still find a purpose for Momento on my iPod Touch. If you are someone like me and have an Momento  app, then read on.)

....so what I am using it for then....

well...there are  two ways of using Momento if not used as a diary or journal because you are just not that kind person.

First, I use it to archive all my tweets from my Twitter account. Momento can download you latest 3200 Tweets and I was lucky since I have tweeted less than that number and was able to download all of my tweets. I think you should start using Momento to download all you tweets if your tweets are less than 3200. (As I pointed out above, Momento currently doesn't have support for  export  of social moments and that means you can't export tweets you have downloaded to Momento.)

Second, I use its search function to search all my posts on my blog. I will do a search in Momento first before I posted anything to my blog for avoiding duplicated entries. (For this to work, you need to use Posterous as your blog and add your Twitter account to its Autopost feature. If you did that, the title of every articles you posted on your blog will also be posted to your Twitter account along with the link to the articles. It should work with Facebook and Last.fm as well since you are able to add them to Autopost.)

iPhone App Review: Mooch! (IOU) - It’s more than an I.O.U.

***This is a review for Mooch! (IOU) in iPod Touch with iOS 4 installed***

Mooch! (IOU) is an beautiful iPhone/iPod Touch app bought to you by MirageBox that manges things that you lent to others and things that others that borrow from you. It runs fine on my iPod Touch even though this version of Mooch! hasn't been tested in iOS 4. What I mean is that it doesn't crash itself like other apps did. I wonder if this is what people called good app. The icon for the app is fine and the app itself looks well-designed but some how I feel like it is incomplete. Below is a list of feature listed on its webiste.

    * Sleek, easy to use interface
    * Simplified organization with summaries by person
    * Seamless integration with your address book
    * Supports borrowing of items and money
    * Snap a photo as a reminder of what was borrowed
    * Send e-mail reminders at the push of a button
    * Supports all currencies

I did a review for OweMe, which is an app that does the same thing like Mooch! (IOU) for your iPhone/iPod Touch. The UI of two app are completely different. I have to say that I love the UI of both apps. To me, Mooch! is much simpler than OweMe for which it doesn't have any setting at all like OweMe. However, I feel like it is much richer than OweMe.

Mooch! (IOU) is very easy to use and fast since it doesn't have any setting at all like I said before. On the main screen (see above and will come back to it later), you see two buttons. the left one is to record things you borrow from others and the right one is to record things you lent to othes. You tap either one for your needs and you will be bring to another screen where you are going to fill in more details for it. (see below)

I am telling you, this the best part of Mooch! (IOU) that I like. As you can see above, there is a "cancel" button on the top-left, which will take you back to main screen. And there is "save" button on the top-right, which you shouldn't be tapping before you input any detail below. First, you tap on "plus" or anywhere on that panel to bring up the contacts in your Address Book and pick a person from the list for this record. Next, pick either "Money" and enter the dollar amount or "Things" and enter a name for it and pick a category. Lastly, you can add a note and add a photo for the record if you want and hit the "save" button on the top-right. The record you just created will show up the main screen.

On the main screen, there are two section, "Active" and "Inactive" area. "Active" section consist of a list of people from whom you still lent and borrowed stuff. And they will become "Inactive" if you tap them to check them off, which means that you don't owe them or them don't owe you. If you have pictures for them on your Address Book, they will be shown, which is good. You can tap on them to see what you have borrowed and lent. You can also tap on the arrow next to their names to bring up a screen where you only see your lending and borrowing from that particular person. What I don't like about the current design of the main screen is that Mooch! (IOU) mark them as completed without any warning when tapped. This makes me thinking that the developer of this app doesn't take this thing seriously. If you accidently tap on a record of someone who borrowed a thousand dollars from you, your money is gone if you understand what I mean.

I said at the the begining that I have an incomplete feeling about this Mooch! (IOU) and here is what I mean. First, I can't enter date manually and can't change either. Second, I can't enter the name manually, Mooch! always bring up the name from the default Contacts app. Third, there is no intergrated Google map service that I found in OweMe, which I do think it is needed for a such app. Although I can add them all to the note, I would tend to forget about entering them.

Overall, Mooch! (IOU) is a useful app with UI design that is yet to be complete before anyone can use it seriously. It's ok for small stuff but I really don't recommend people using it for work and business related borrowing and lending. Furthermore, I don't think Mooch! is more than an I.O.U. application on your iPhone or iPod Touch as the developer described for now. It still lack some as I pointed out in the last paragraph. (THE END)

App Review: Newsprint - Professional grade feed reader

***This is a review for Newsprint (version 1.1) on iOS 4***

S1

Newsprint is a RSS/Atom reader application for iPhone and iPod Touch. The website (http://www.newsprintapp.com/) of the application is really well-designed as it is true for the icon of Newsprint. It just looks so gorgeous and made it stands out a lot in iTunes' App Store. I would give it 3 out of 5 star in iTunes, just for that good-looking icon. However, I have a mixed feeling for Newsprint.

Mobile_photo_jul_7_2010_9_44_54_am

The developer describe it as a "Professional grade feed reader" on the its website. I certainly don't know what does it means by that. What I do know is that Newsprint does have features that I don't see in other well-known RSS readers in iTunes.  Here is a list of features from its website.
Mobile_photo_jul_7_2010_9_45_33_am

  • Store your feeds locally or sync with Google Reader to keep in sync between your computer and your iPhone.
  • With Newsprint's global search you can not only search for something but also save that search and Newsprint will tell you when one of your feeds mentions it.
  • Find something interesting but don't have enough time to really dive in? Just quickly mark it as starred or save it to Instapaper, Delicious or ReadItLater.
  • Don't just read your feeds, share them with the world via email, Twitter, and two-way Google Reader Sharing.
  • Forgot the site you looked at from a link in an article? Just use our Web History tool to find that page and pull it up with just a tap.
  • Life should be easy, and so should adding feeds. Add a feed from a list of popular sites with a single tap, or add it manually and take advantage of our auto-complete widget to make typing easier.

Mobile_photo_jul_7_2010_9_45_53_am

BTW, that's not all features of Newsprint. You could go to the link below to download a complete list of Newsprint's features in PDF.

http://www.newsprintapp.com/Newsprint_Feature_List.pdf

Mobile_photo_jul_7_2010_9_46_46_am

I am wondering if having more features than other RSS Readers in iTunes is what it means to be professional. What do you think? Anyway, I said that I have a mixed feeling about this application in the first paragraph and here is why. Newspirnt itself is indeeded well-desgined and you can't deny that. However, the problem lies on the actual use of the application. It's just not as smooth as Byline, which I will also be reviewing in the future. I keeps getting  error when entering my google account. There can't be thing that is more annoying than that. Further more, it crashed on me when I skipped tapping on the "Done" button on the keyboard after entering both the username and password of my google account and went straight by tapping on the "Save" button on the upper-right corner of the screen. In short, "Error" and "Crash" are the two main reason I have this mixed feeling for Newsprint even though I do love the UI a lot. However, the cause of them could also be that I am testing it in iOS  4.x instead of iPhone OS 3.x. None the less, the developer sure is slow when it comes to updating Newsprint and making it compatible with iOS 4.
Mobile_photo_jul_7_2010_9_48_06_am

What's the point of this review if I can't have it to sync with my Google Reader to have the full experience of Newsrint when that's what it does, right? Well, It  turns out that, unlike other similar applications in iTunes,  you have the option of choosing "Don't Sync" when started Newsprint for the first time. Further more, you are able to add feeds manually or use "Quick Add" and choose from a list of popular feeds that is built into the application. Then, here comes another the bad news, since I couldn't import feeds from Google Reader, I tried to add serveral feeds using "Quick Add" and I keeps getting pop-up error window when refreshing the feeds. Plus, there is another bug that causes the refreshing button on the lower-left to dissapear when tapped it offline. The good news is that when entering feeds manually, it will work just fine.
Mobile_photo_jul_7_2010_9_45_06_am

The Good

In-app setting
Built-in global search
Beautifully designed UI
Very responsive swiping
Mark all read and unread again
Ability to choose Article Text Size
Save the search term and find in all your feeds
Add feeds manually and no syncing with Google Reader

Mobile_photo_jul_7_2010_9_46_59_am

The Bad

 Crashing a lot.
 Google Reader login issue
Errors for "Quick Add" feeds when refreshing.
Graphical glitches on "Mark unread" button when tapped

Mobile_photo_jul_7_2010_9_46_21_am

I can't tell how it performs in iPhone OS 3.x  since I am doing this with iOS 4 installed. Reading the reviews in iTunes, they are really making Newsprint like shit. Few rating and lots complains about crashing. Although I totally agree with them that the current version of Newsprint is kind buggy and I have experienced myself during the testing, I still think that Newsprint is a very promising RSS reader in its category in iTunes that offers some features that you don't currently see in others. . I would probably give it 3 out 5 star if rated.

App Review: Bills ~ On Your Table (Reviewed on iOS 4)

***THIS REVIEW IS FOR VERSION 1.3 OF BILLS ~ ON YOUR TABLE, WHICH ADDED iOS 4.0 & MULTITASKING SUPPORT!***

Today, I like to do a review of an iPhone/iPod Touch application called Bills ~ On Your Table. We all have some kind bills that we have to pay and tracking them could be a pain for some of us. I think you should get your hands on this app and NO MORE WORRING ABOUT LATE FEES. It is very easy to use and well-designed at the same time. However, there is one ugliness that unsatisfied me and I really don't know how could the developer left it out. (READ ON TO FIND OUT WHAT I MEAN)

1

Here is a full list of features on this version of Bills ~ On Your Table that I found on its website.(http://www.powerybase.com/bills/)

  • Beautiful user interface
  • 170 currencies and region formats supported
  • Free lifetime push notifications
  • Web access for added convenience
  • No backing up, everything stored on our secure server
  • Payment log with a history of actions
  • 9 Push alert sounds including the dangling coins
  • Passcode lock for added security
  • Custom repeatings, pre-alerts & categories
  • Quick statistics and totals
  • Partial payments support
  • Dynamic monthly bills support

Bills ~ OYT comes FREE LIFETIME PUSH NOTIFICATIONS. This is indeed a big PLUS. Further more, the developer also made a Web Access at (http://www.powerybase.com/webaccess.aspx), where you can add bills to Bills ~ OYT via any any web browsers in case you don't have your iDevices at hand. They will be pushed to Bills ~ OYT on your iDevices. I have tested the PUSH Notification and it worked really well.

Let me tell you a little interesting experience I had with Bills ~ OYT after updating my iPod Touch to iOS 4. I started the app and was asked to either sign-in with my exiting account or create a new one. I don't like the current email I signed up and chose to create a new one. Next day, I got push notification from Bills when the Wi-Fi was turned on. It was weird since I don't remember adding any bills to it with this new account I created. I was surprised at first and then quickly figured out that the PUSH was for bills that I added to my old account on Bills. How interesting. I mean, how the heck does it know where to send the PUSH NOTIFICATION when I signed in with totally different account that I have never added single bills. Later on, I deleted the bills on my old account by using the Web Access and NO MORE PUSH from old account. I don't know if I should call this a bug or not. Even if It is a bug, it really doesn't bother me that much since it can be fixed easily. THE END.

NOW, LET ME GIVE YOU SOME BASIC HANDS-ON ON BILLS ~ OYT.

Mobile_photo_jul_3_2010_4_08_38_pm

Upon opening the Bills ~ OYT for the first time. You will be asked to create an account when you first open the application. (such as entering email address and password.) Once you did that, you are presented with the home screen shown below.

Mobile_photo_jul_3_2010_4_09_14_pm

The screen is beautifully designed. It gives you a clean view of anything that you should pay attentions to via these 4 colorful panels. Red one shows your overdue bills, Green one show your bills due today, Blue one shows today's pre-alert and the grey one shows any bills due within 30 days. There is "Edit" button on the top left, which allows you to delete the last panel and a "Plus" button on top-right for adding a new bill. You can tap the "view" to see more detail on the bills that showed up under the panel. Tap again to edit the bill if you want. ( Even if there is nothing on the panel, you can still tap the "view" on it and that white sheet hanging under it will roll out and you can tap it to create a new bill.) You can always coming back to this screen by tapping on the first button on the bottom of the screen. The button next to it gives you the calendar view as you see below.

Mobile_photo_jul_3_2010_4_09_29_pm

Days will be marked if there are any bills due on them. You can going backward and forward with the two arrow button there. There is "Today" button on the top-left to quickly come back to today in calendar. There is also a "Plus" button on the top-right for your conveniences to add a bill. The third button is the "Categories" screen as you see below.

Mobile_photo_jul_3_2010_4_09_46_pm

You can delete or create you own to suit your needs.

Mobile_photo_jul_3_2010_4_09_55_pm

The screen above is "Stats" screen, where you can check to see how much you paid and not paid in each category between a period of time. The final button is the "Setting" as you see below.

Mobile_photo_jul_3_2010_4_10_04_pm

It used to be two separated buttons ("Sync" and "Setting") in previous version of Bills ~ OYT. Now they have been combined and just named "Setting".

Mobile_photo_jul_3_2010_4_08_51_pm

Now, it's time to reveal that ugliness I mentioned in the very beginning of this review. Just take a look at the picture above and compare to other pictures you see on this review. Doesn't that keypad bothers you at all? well, it bothers me much. I hope the developer would fixed this up by putting a nice clothes on the keypad after reading this review.

Overall, this version of Bills ~ OYT is quite stable in iOS 4, except sometimes it will stuck on the splash screen. During my testing, I notices that you can't edit the "Due Date" and "Repeating" sections after saving a new bills you created with repeating mode on. I just don't see why the developer would do that or is it just me who don't get it. Furthermore, there is no way no way of changing your web access email. I would like to see an option to change the email that I used to sign-up for Web Access after sign-in. We should at lease be able to delete the account and create a new one if you can't change the email.

Bills ~ OYT really is quite impressive and I think putting down some bucks for it won't hurt as much as paying your late bill fees if you don't like it. It manages your bills with a gorgeous UI that you just can't resist.

I am sure many of you have heard about Yahoo! Inc.  It provides many online services like web mail and  many others. The iPhone application I am reviewing today has to do with one of the services that came from Yahoo! To tell the truth, I have never heard of this service before I heard about this application.

This service from Yahoo is called Upcoming (http://upcoming.yahoo.com/). Yahoo has developed some iPhone application for some of its services like Yahoo! Mesenger, Yahoo! Entertainment and so for users to easily access them on the go  on their iPhones. Sadly, it never developed an iPhone application for its Upcoming service. That's where Happening , an iPhone application developed by Nik Fletcher came in and filled that blank for all of you who use the upcoming service.

Happening for iPhone is sleek and well-designed application that brings you local events from Yahoo's Upcoming service. With Happening installed on your iPhones, you are just one tap away to check nearby events around you. You never again have to open up Safari application on your iPhone and navigate it to the upcoming website. It's just too much steps. Happening made it easy for you and it just look better. You can even view your friends events and RSVP to events from within the Happening application. You are going to love it if you frequently use Yahoo's Upcoming service.

The follow is a full list of what Happening application can do for you. (I just copied them from the application's website).

  • Happening finds events near you, and lists them in chronological order so you know what’s really happening.
  • Find any event on Upcoming, no matter where in the world it’s going on. Bands to barcamps, it’s all at your fingertips.
  • Once you sign in using your Upcoming account, your Friends’ events are there for your perusal.
  • Keeping your calendar in check is easy, with a dedicated tab for viewing events you’re interested in.
  • RSVP to events using your Upcoming account with the ability to set your attendee status.

**Notice that there will be two more features coming soon and they are Twitter sharing and FireEagle location updating.

Overall, Happening for iPhone is a good and solid. It is a must-have if you access or use Upcmong service from Yahoo. However, since the application is heavily relying on Yahoo's Upcoming service to find nearby events data, it would be totally useless to people who don't use Upcoming or just don't care what's happening around them.

**The developer has updated the application to support iOS 4.

**Are you one of these people who needs it or don't? Leave a comment  if you wish.

iPhone App Review - MoneyBook

There are many expense tracking applications on App store. However, I only have my eyes  set for MoneyBook after seeing its screenshots from someone's blog. It has the most beautiful user interface that I can't find in other expense apps. Further more, it is has an incredibly easy to use interface. This is an truely amazing iPhone expense tracking application that I have been waiting for.

MoneyBook gets better and better with new added features and improvement from each updates. As with the latest update, you are able to your budget for each month and you are no long adding your expenses only but also be able to add incomings as well. The developers of MoneyBook seem to have a plan for next big update as well.

Before MoneyBook came out, I used to think iXpensise as  best looking app and easy to use on the same time. However, I have certainly have changed my mind about one.  MoneyBook  is so well-designed and the developers did a great job on how to present the monthly spending to its users visually. it's so gorgeous.

After reading the blog of the developers of Moneybook, I am happy to find out that they have a love for the user interface and love for its icon. They also believed that an attractive icon really matters  and it just attract people's attention. I am totally agree with them. I am a sucker for eye candy apps and I don't look at apps that don't have a pretty icon. MoneyBook is so well-designed and beautifully done. I am so impressed that I couldn't get it out of my head.

Here is a list of Features that MoneyBook CAN DO:

    •    CSV Export
    •    Add incomings
    •    Edit the date of the expense
    •    Full support for editing expenses
    •    Add notes for your transactions
    •    Visually attractive animated statistics
    •    Add recurring monthly expenses

Here is a list of Features that MoneyBook CAN’T DO:

    •    NO sync or backup
    •    NO powerful reporting
    •    NO multiple custom budgets
    •    NO storing photo receipt
    •    NO custom categories

I am sure the developers of MoneyBook will add more features in the future updates. As they said in the “Help” section of the app, they do care about adding new stuff to MoneyBook and they also want to keep a “simple, clean, beautiful and focused” user interface for MoneyBook. I am satisfied with what MoneyBook can do so far but I do wish they can add the iDisk backup and restore feature soon.

Ok, let’s fire up the application and  give you some totoruials on how to do the basics.

1
The image above is the OVERVIEW screen where you get a glance at your top spending and how much left in your budget.

2
This second image you see above is where you add your expenses. You will see this by tapping on the "New transaction" from the OVERVIEW screen. Notices that you are able to change date by tapping on the icon under "cancel" button and add notes by tapping on the icon under "Save" button. You then tap on the BLANK area between these two icons to go back.

3
This is transactions screen. You see all your transactions for current month ONLY. Transactions on each day is taped seperately and you also see a totally spending for each day.

4
Turn your iPhone into landscape mode while in the Transaction screen to see a breakdown of your monthly expenses in this  beautiful Bar Chart. On the far left are your totally expenses and incomings for current month.
5
This is the Recurring screen where you can add transactions and they will be automaticlly added to your expense every month.

6
Lastly, this is the History screen where you can acess all your transactions that you have on MoneyBook. You can export them as csv file by tapping on the button on the top right corner. By the way, you will see a beutiful Dotted Line Chart if you turn your iPhone into landscape mode.

7
If you are looking for a good looking and easy to use iPhone application to track your budget and daily expenses, look no further, MoneyBook is the one you need. This application may not be a powerful one that packed with funtions you are looking for. However, it is a grogeous looking one that not other applications in the same category can come close to.

SECRET: Whether you are viewing transactions in Transactions screen or in History, you can tap on the button on the bottom to quickly scroll down. (This works in MoneyBook ONLY).

iPhone App Review: Articles - The Wikipedia App

Articles - The Wikipedia App is a sleek iPhone application developed by Sophiestication Software. What the application does is that it allows you to access wikipedia website without using Safari on your iPhone or iPod touch. There is also an iPad version available but what I focus here is the Articles for iPhone. You can think of it as wikipedia to go in your pocket.  There are many iPhone applications in App store do the exact same thing like Articles. I can't say if Articles is the best among them all but I have to say that it is one of the most beautiful one among them all.

1

You will find Articles to be easy to use because it has the same navigational controls like Safari on your iPhone or iPod Touch. You will only see a search bar at the top of the screen but no address bar that you see in Safari. It is simply no needed. You will also see the navigational buttons at the bottom  just like you see in Safari.  Type whatever you want to search in the search bar then tap Search on the keyboard. That's it. By the way, you are able to select a language for your search.
4

Articles is a browser that is dedicated to wikipedia website and I prefer to use it when I just want to go to wikipedia's website. Here are some features of Articles that you may want to know. It supports offline viewing and I think it has the best compare to other applications I know. You are  able to view images offline and tap them to zoom in and tap again to either copy or save the image. You can also rotate your iPhone or iPod Touch  to view articles in landscape mode.  Then there are two buttons in Articles you may find them useful in a way. They are Surprise me button that displays a random articles from wikipedia's website and Nearby button that displays things based on your current location.
2

Articles has a very nice icon that makes it stands out. However, what made it stands out even more is the decision of making On this day... iPhone application FREE when Articles hits 10,000 downloads in App store. It has made Articles the most noticeable wikipedia iPhone application.
